Snippet Saturday: Oct 24

Today’s snippet is from my book Whispered Summons in the Halloween anthology Something In The Shadows published by Midnight Tide Publishing. It releases Oct 28th and I can’t wait for you to read this story!!! I just love Cass, and maybe one day I’ll turn this novella into a full length novel.

“Iz, I made a mistake last night, but I didn’t know it.” I took a deep breath and squeezed her hands, her grip on me almost painful. “Last night, after you went to bed, I was reading through a book on demons, and I happened to murmur a spell. I didn’t think anything of it because they’re usually complex spells. Well, apparently this is one of the easiest spells, so all you have to do is recite it.”

“Meeps, what happened?”

I was avoiding the truth for as long as possible, but it was only upsetting Izzy further. Taking my hands back, I wiped my face and heaved a heavy sigh. This was it.

Meeting Izzy’s terrified face, I confessed my sin. “Last night I summoned a demon.”

Her mouth popped open. Even young Izzy knew better than to do that. It was dark magic and forbidden by our coven.

“I didn’t plan on it,” I urged, wanting my baby sister to understand what was happening. “It was a mistake. How was I supposed to know?”

“Is he going to kill us?” Izzy squeaked, her body starting to tremble with the news.

I shook my head. “No, I don’t think so. He’s not that kind of demon.”

Eyes widening further, Izzy gasped softly. “There’s more than one type of demon?”

“Apparently so, which is exactly what I was looking at last night,” I muttered. “All the spells were so incredibly complex. I just happened to pick the one that wasn’t complex to whisper.”

“What are you going to do?”

I deflated as a fist banged against the door in a solid knock that made us both squeak, and I grabbed Izzy, keeping myself between the door and her.

Who said something about a #BookFair?

Trident on a dramatic background

You read that right! I remember book fairs when I was a kid in school. They were one of the most looked forward to days of the year, and now that I’m an adult and don’t have access to a regular book fair, it’s less fun. BUT, I recently found one, and two of my books are enrolled in it! Even better, they’re both on sale for $.99 throughout the book fair. I believe most, if not all of the books are on sale. Also, these are fantasy/paranormal books, which are my favorites. This isn’t a book fair you’ll want to miss. If you love books, this is your stop, and don’t forget to share the news so others can find great books too!

Plus, I don’t know about you, but with winter here in Wisconsin, I’m already tired of the snow and cold. We’re supposed to get another 7-12″ between last night and today. I love winter, and I love snow, but this year I’m sick of both. Oh, and the -55*F wind chill from a few weeks ago. So, if you’re like me and huddling inside out of the cold when you can, you might as well cuddle up with a warm blanket and drink, with a good book. I wish I could do that every day!

Snippet Saturday: Feb 2

This year’s goal is to use my website more to keep people updated on my books and life, and it’s still taking me some time to get this particular item up and running. But here’s the start. I’m going to try to keep consistent on this. What I’d like is for every first and third Saturday to be Snippet Saturday where I can post a small snippet from one of my books. We’ll see how you like them! Here’s the first, from “Gargoyle’s Pixie” the second book in the Gargoyle Collection. It’s a standalone, and book one doesn’t have to be read first for this book to be understood.

Pixie Teaser 1

I leapt into the air, but I was barely off the ground before a strong hand came at me from the left, scooping me from the air and pinning my wings in his hold. The angle at which they were twisted sent a sharp ache into my back and I hissed past the pain. Wincing, I tried not to move.
“What have we here?” he mused with soft laughter. “Hello, pixie.”
Without being able to cross my arms in defiance since they were pinned in his hold as well, I settled for glaring at him. I was minding my own business. Why had he felt the need to capture me?
“Out spying for your swarm, huh?”
I continued to glare. There was no reason to admit to this gargoyle that I didn’t have a swarm. He wouldn’t believe me anyway.
“You found her?” the cheery female voice called from behind the gargoyle. “Can I see her?”
“Easy, Lari, you don’t know how many others are around,” another gargoyle spoke up. It sounded like the blond man. “They’re feisty when they’re in a large group. If it’s a scout, we’ll be fine. If it’s the whole swarm, then tonight is going to be rough.”
“Where’s your swarm?” the gargoyle who held me asked, but I turned away, closing my eyes. I didn’t have to answer to him. He shook me slightly, but for him, slightly was enough to whip my head back and forth in a violent motion. My wing pinched and I hissed again, but refused to show him the level of pain it had caused on my face. “Where is your swarm, pixie?”
“Stop manhandling her,” the female, Lari, said from beside the gargoyle. I lifted my eyes to her and found a tall, black winged gargoyle with long, strawberry blonde hair staring at me. “She’s pretty. I love your hair.”
“Thanks,” I muttered.
“So, she does talk,” the gargoyle who held me mused. “You just don’t want to talk to me?”
“You’re holding me in your hand and pinching my wings. What do you think?” I growled, which was a stupid idea and I clamped my mouth shut.
He cocked a grin at me. “Would it be better if I held onto you by your wings instead?”
“No. Put me down.”
“I’m sorry. I can’t do that. We can’t have you running off to your swarm and telling them where we are, now can we?”
It was no use. I wasn’t getting out of this with my dignity intact. Heck, I was being held in a gargoyle’s grip. My dignity had already taken a low blow. It couldn’t get much worse.
Dropping my head, I mumbled, “I don’t have a swarm.”

#Indiebooklist Monday: Week 3

week 3

Week 3: Heather Karn

Book: Gargoyle’s Kiss

This week’s author is one I know very well! It’s me! Like I first explained, my friend Julie Trettel and I are doing this project together, so our books are included in this list. Gargoyle’s Kiss was never among the ideas I had planned for a book, but when the idea sprouted, I dropped everything I was doing to write it. I’ve never had a book come to me so easily and with the speed this one wrote. This book was so popular that my readers started asking for more from this world, so I’ve done just that. The next book (also a standalone) just released, so if you want to check it out, it’s called Gargoyle’s Pixie. Even more books are coming in this collection! It certainly is a fan favorite!

“I craved the sun until I found the moon.”

Gargoyles, the ugly, mutant creatures atop prestigious old buildings. Just statues and tales. At least that’s what Larissa thought. She didn’t believe the rumors of gargoyles living in the forbidden forest that sat behind the university, or the rumors that the mysterious Gargoyle’s Kiss would set them free, at least not until she unintentionally kissed one. But kissing a statue of an unusually attractive man shouldn’t be life changing. After all, what’s the harm in a little kiss?
